Michael Sheetal: 2009-01-05 02:52:32
already on my list of things to do ... I am half way through making the class to de-crunch all the different URL shorteners
Ray Grieselhuber: 2009-01-05 02:21:05
this is pretty cool - it would be nice to get a de-tinyurl'd version of the url so I know what I'm about to click
Michael Sheetal: 2009-01-05 01:30:27
something new to kick off the new year ... my little holiday project is up (but not fully featured yet) ... http://retweetist.com ... use retweets as a metric for "interestingness" and find interesting links and users with it. updates to come over the next weeks. let me know what you think, suggestions etc
Daniel Chapman: 2009-01-03 10:40:29

Since Christmas is well over, time to focus on New Years (which, of course, is far more acknowledged in Japan). We enjoyed doing our CHICKEN thing, now looking forward to mikan under the tokatsu... and a few days break (after the cleaning of course). Love life in Japan. (flag:jp)
Robert Sanzalone: 2008-12-26 16:55:01
Tried the UltraSuperNew thingy.. nope, tried EVERY combination and no go. Thanks Michael. Will catch up with you in the new year to see how that one goes.
Robert Sanzalone: 2008-12-26 16:54:07
Congrats on the house Daniel. Heard about your BIIIIIIG purchase from a mutual friend lately. Impressed and jealous!!!!
(smirk)
Robert Sanzalone: 2008-12-26 16:53:16
Merry Christmas to all (ya, I know, like a couple of days late). TOTALLY have been on the iPhone the whole time.. including VOIPing A LOT to friends and family in other countries..again on the iPhone. Was experimenting with LogMeIn tonight and decided to open up Skype. Whoa!

Michael Sheetal: 2008-12-25 02:51:46
you have the official endorsement ... although as soon as people start using it with dodgy sites the value of the endorsement might go down
Michael Keferl: 2008-12-25 02:50:32
can I take this as an endorsement then? the USN Stamp of Approval could be like a CE mark for digital coolness
Michael Sheetal: 2008-12-25 02:47:49

Daniel Chapman: 2008-12-22 09:48:40
who was that?
teketeke83: 2008-12-21 12:58:48
hi
Stephen Shores: 2008-12-20 13:45:58
I'm still on Mixi, but it feels a little restricted, I guess. They could really use an interface refresh. Oh, and I need to learn Japanese.
Stephen Shores: 2008-12-20 13:45:13
It's like Myspace for grownups.
Stephen Shores: 2008-12-20 13:45:03
I was actually on Facebook before, but I deleted it along with my Myspace account. I didn't understand the point of Facebook at the time, but after watching how much my wife is into it, I think I 'get it' now.
Stephen Shores: 2008-12-20 13:42:30
Also now on Friendbook, I mean Facefeed....oh yeah, Facebook. http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1621706324
Stephen Shores: 2008-12-20 13:35:36
(via direct message)
Stephen Shores: 2008-12-20 13:35:22
Slightly off topic: Got a Wii for an early Christmas present. If anyone here would like to exchange friend codes, let me know.
Stephen Shores: 2008-12-20 13:16:23
Wish I could've seen your speech, Kris. Let us know the next time you speak.
Stephen Shores: 2008-12-20 13:16:09
Loved the touristy photo, Robert.
Stuart Woodward: 2008-12-20 12:42:09
where are you?
.kristopher tate: 2008-12-20 10:32:25
long earthquake there.
.kristopher tate: 2008-12-20 10:32:21
woah
Ray Grieselhuber: 2008-12-18 05:59:39
Good afternoon all - does anyone happen to know of a good hosting provider in japan with dedicated and / or highly flexible virtual models (a la slicehost), ideally also (though not absolutely necessary) with english support?
.kristopher tate: 2008-12-18 03:55:09
feel free to comment
.kristopher tate: 2008-12-18 03:55:03
I found these photos from facebook about the event: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=68120&…
Robert Sanzalone: 2008-12-18 03:24:24
Thanks (wave)
Robert Sanzalone: 2008-12-18 03:23:13
Does anyone know if I can get a Nokia DT-22 tripod mount in Japan? It also works as an iPhone tripod mount. Want to try locally before I go online to buy.
Robert Sanzalone: 2008-12-18 03:13:45
(y)Cool. Great job .kristopher
.kristopher tate: 2008-12-18 00:40:39
I was told by many that it was highly inspirational, and I hope to see many young entrepreneurs out there starting new ventures and ideas!
.kristopher tate: 2008-12-18 00:39:40
the talk centered on the current economic crisis and what we can do from japan to spark a new web economy here in Japan.
.kristopher tate: 2008-12-18 00:38:56
but there were a number of people who took photos
.kristopher tate: 2008-12-18 00:38:35
unfortunately, we didn't get a camera up because there wasn't a tripod to mount it
.kristopher tate: 2008-12-18 00:38:12
the presentation was a blast
.kristopher tate: 2008-12-18 00:38:05

.kristopher tate: 2008-12-18 00:38:03

Robert Sanzalone: 2008-12-17 15:31:16
I'm wondering about the Waseda presentation as well...
=wil (Wil Tan): 2008-12-17 13:51:04
Sorry I couldn't make it, Chris
=wil (Wil Tan): 2008-12-17 13:50:54
I had to postpone my trip until Sunday because my cat fell ill
Paul Papadimitriou: 2008-12-17 13:17:19
So, how did the presentation at Wasedo go?
.kristopher tate: 2008-12-17 02:12:40
We're going to try and record it
.kristopher tate: 2008-12-17 02:12:33
Yeah
Andrew Shuttleworth: 2008-12-17 02:06:33
Good luck with the presentation. Unfortunately I can't make it, but I'm sure it will be good. Will you be recording it?

.kristopher tate: 2008-12-17 01:07:31

.kristopher tate: 2008-12-17 01:07:19
I really enjoy meeting you all in person
.kristopher tate: 2008-12-17 01:07:11
I've been told that they've reserved a considerably sized room on the main campus, so please come out!
.kristopher tate: 2008-12-17 01:06:47
Today's the day -- I'm going to be talking over at Waseda University
.kristopher tate: 2008-12-17 01:06:33

.kristopher tate: 2008-12-10 07:07:23
seriously, mixi just gets worse day by day.
.kristopher tate: 2008-12-10 07:06:51
without any warning or email to me?
.kristopher tate: 2008-12-10 07:06:46

Robert Sanzalone: 2008-12-10 06:29:56
All done. Thanks Shinya for the fav!
Robert Sanzalone: 2008-12-10 05:47:34

.kristopher tate: 2008-12-10 05:42:52
Ah, that's from awhile back
Robert Sanzalone: 2008-12-10 05:38:13
.kristopher... nice pic with Scoble on Facebook there, btw..
Robert Sanzalone: 2008-12-10 05:35:47
Played around with vlingo today. Really suggest this free app for the iPhone owners in this group. Turns a tweet into text "locally" then allows you to upload to Twitter or Facebook. Gives you a chance to change the text before you upload so you don't get any "surprises" as a post.
Robert Sanzalone: 2008-12-10 05:29:42
Exactly. Cute how you give them your name for a "passport" at the beginning of the attraction.. then E.T. gives you a "personal" MERRY CHRISTMAS at the end of the ride. Flying over the city on a bike was the best part.
Robert Sanzalone: 2008-12-10 05:28:32
Didn't get a a chance to try Terminator. Backdraft was another pleasant surprise... as was the San Francisco clam chowder.
.kristopher tate: 2008-12-10 05:28:25
No matter how many times E.T. phones home, he still ends up at a universal studios... somewhere.
Robert Sanzalone: 2008-12-10 05:27:40
E.T. is a bit dated.
Robert Sanzalone: 2008-12-10 05:27:30
Jaws is now Lame.
Robert Sanzalone: 2008-12-10 05:27:25
I believe it! Spiderman was the attraction which surprised me. Outstanding ride. You GOTTA check it out!
.kristopher tate: 2008-12-10 05:26:43
they do have a special clinic for that (no joke)
.kristopher tate: 2008-12-10 05:26:29
Hey, that can happen
Robert Sanzalone: 2008-12-10 05:26:25
has OD'ed on Hello Kitty.
.kristopher tate: 2008-12-10 05:26:01
ah, USJ
Robert Sanzalone: 2008-12-10 05:25:52
But then again, I've had enough cute for a while, just getting back from Universal Studios Japan.

Stefanos: 2008-12-09 14:40:51

Eric Rice: 2008-12-09 02:32:25
go to any championship sports game afterparties when stuff is torched
Eric Rice: 2008-12-09 02:32:01
and some of us have more experience being near situations like in greece than in mumbai
Eric Rice: 2008-12-09 02:31:43
agreed
yongfook: 2008-12-09 02:00:39
:/
yongfook: 2008-12-09 01:57:06
put it this way, I'd rather be in greece than mumbai...
yongfook: 2008-12-09 01:55:49
but there are no more casualties right?  mumbai was a bunch of guys with automatic weapons and orders to kill as many people as they could.
yongfook: 2008-12-09 01:55:14
burning stuff etc
yongfook: 2008-12-09 01:55:06
a policeman killed a boy - by accident it seems - and has been charged with manslaughter.  that boy's gang, known anarchists, have now incited a riot and are tearing up the town
yongfook: 2008-12-09 01:54:17
maybe the news isn't reporting the reality, but to say it's "worse than mumbai" is a bit much
Stefanos: 2008-12-08 23:22:21
take care
Stefanos: 2008-12-08 23:22:19

Spot news

We have received thousands of images from around the world of both major news events and local issues.

It was you who captured some of the most powerful images from major events such as the attack on the London transport network in July 2005, the storms that swept the UK in January 2007 and the Asian tsunami of December 2004.

If you take a picture of any event you should not endanger yourself or others, take any unnecessary risks or infringe any laws.

Your perspective

Remember, whilst we are after news images we're also interested in your visual interpretation of both local and global issues as well as just great pictures of your daily lives.

Each week our picture editor will select and publish the best of those each Friday - so do keep on sending them in.

What we need

You can submit video, single photographs or a series that tell a story for a photo essay.

Remember that we do need some text to accompany the pictures. A brief guide to shooting a photo essay can be found below.

Stuart Woodward: 2008-12-02 07:37:48

Stuart Woodward: 2008-12-02 07:34:44
heh
.kristopher tate: 2008-12-02 07:33:17
Pownce actually was going to be a venture between myself and her -- it was originally called socialbeep
.kristopher tate: 2008-12-02 07:31:31
.kristopher tate: 2008-12-02 07:31:03
ah, here we go about leah culver.
Stuart Woodward: 2008-12-02 06:54:27
---- Python, CouchDB, Django geek... I'm in love...
Michael Sheetal: 2008-12-02 06:54:16
they are not after the product so closing it means nothing... it is in plain sight that they are after the people, so I don't think closing the services does any damage. none were mainstream anyway... i think both aquisitions were very good moves
Stuart Woodward: 2008-12-02 06:51:54
I'm not sure it does the buyer much good in terms of reputation when they announce buyout and closure even though it might be charitable and well intentioned in terms of helping out the founder of the service that they are buying
Robert Sanzalone: 2008-12-02 06:49:59
Geek Royalty. Huh. Gotta add that one to my vocab...
Michael Sheetal: 2008-12-02 06:49:00
Leah Culver is a bit of a catch... smart gal... and 2nd tier geek royalty... big move to nab her
Stuart Woodward: 2008-12-02 06:47:03
I guess they get some good people and code that they can reuse even if they don't keep the service going
Robert Sanzalone: 2008-12-02 06:46:22
8-)
Michael Sheetal: 2008-12-02 06:45:56
if i was cashed up i would be doing the same as 6apart
Stuart Woodward: 2008-12-02 06:45:47
I was in company acquired by Digital Garage when the Internet Bubble burst in Japan
Michael Sheetal: 2008-12-02 06:45:30
bargain prices right now
Stuart Woodward: 2008-12-02 06:45:11
I think a lot of these startups were planning to be acquired and the future looks bleak for future funding in the near term
Robert Sanzalone: 2008-12-02 06:44:39
Andrew still has a wet pillow from that one.
Robert Sanzalone: 2008-12-02 06:44:00
Ah right. Ya, that one really surprised me too.
Stuart Woodward: 2008-12-02 06:43:39
bought by Twitter... to acquire Rael Dornfest
Stuart Woodward: 2008-12-02 06:43:06
http://getsatisfaction.com/…/a_fork_in_the_road_an_important_an&hellip
Stuart Woodward: 2008-12-02 06:37:00
Pownce is dead... a second company in a week to be acquired for it's talent with the service closing down afterwards...
Robert Sanzalone: 2008-12-02 05:56:35
Wondering how things will pan out between Six Apart's Pownce vs. Digital Garage's Twitter. Mothra vs. Godzilla? Japan may be the place for the smackdown.
Robert Sanzalone: 2008-12-02 05:50:55

i want to know where all the sociologists are, the ones trained to study the behaviors of groups of people, who also happen to understand technological magnification of said behaviors
Eric Rice: 2008-11-29 23:08:29

I think I just broke facebook
.kristopher tate: 2008-11-22 15:14:10
Well
Daniel Chapman: 2008-11-21 15:50:24
Seeing as I send 90% of my emails to her
Daniel Chapman: 2008-11-21 15:50:06
but a bit dissapointing that I still can7t use emoji in emails to my mrs
Daniel Chapman: 2008-11-21 15:49:41
no idea. I will stick my iphone for now though
.kristopher tate: 2008-11-21 15:47:37
I wonder if Android has a defined standard for emoji?
.kristopher tate: 2008-11-21 15:47:16
and then they decided to have their own for kicks.
.kristopher tate: 2008-11-21 15:47:08
with vodaphone, j-phone
.kristopher tate: 2008-11-21 15:46:59
because of the legacy
.kristopher tate: 2008-11-21 15:46:51
they have three standards for emoji
.kristopher tate: 2008-11-21 15:46:46
No, it's just that with softbank
Daniel Chapman: 2008-11-21 15:46:23
my previous softbank phone could, trust apple to not go with the standard...
.kristopher tate: 2008-11-21 15:46:17
I bet the entire thing was designed in Cupertino.
.kristopher tate: 2008-11-21 15:46:05
figures.
.kristopher tate: 2008-11-21 15:46:02
hmm
Daniel Chapman: 2008-11-21 15:43:42
my wifes phone can't read them
Daniel Chapman: 2008-11-21 15:43:37
bah, it appears not to work between non iphones
Daniel Chapman: 2008-11-21 15:39:30
ooh you need to turn it on in the keyboards
Daniel Chapman: 2008-11-21 15:25:02
I just updated, and I can't see them
Daniel Chapman: 2008-11-21 15:24:54
hmm doesn7t appear so
.kristopher tate: 2008-11-21 15:05:14
but, it seems that most of my colleagues have them.
.kristopher tate: 2008-11-21 15:04:55
I don't own an iPhone,
.kristopher tate: 2008-11-21 15:04:51
no worries
Daniel Chapman: 2008-11-21 15:04:30
not sure just wanted ot check
.kristopher tate: 2008-11-21 15:03:54
Didn't they just release it with 2.2?
Daniel Chapman: 2008-11-21 14:42:40
any idea when the emoji update  for iphonewill be?
Kirk McMurray: 2008-11-18 10:52:23
@thetechmonkey you may think you're asking too much, but if we do our jobs well, that is a use case we would like to solve, i.e. I'm interested in x, I speak this language well, and our system says "how about these words, phrases, lists, videos, etc."
TheTechMonkey: 2008-11-18 10:46:22
@mcmurrak; kinda figured my demands were posssibly asking too much, but its just a slight personal problem and hopefully only temporarily, as I can speak the Japanese language, the normal everyday talk, but when it comes to my field, its all new to me.  thanks again
TheTechMonkey: 2008-11-18 10:31:11
@mcmurrak thanks, and yes your site came up when I did a google search the other night, so I will be looking at that soon
Kim Ahlström: 2008-11-18 08:34:50
it's been in perpetual almost-there-status for ages now. Just need to get my ass in gear and finish it up
Kim Ahlström: 2008-11-18 08:34:30
@dominiek, good question
Kim Ahlström: 2008-11-18 08:34:23
@ray, thanks!
Dominiek ter Heide: 2008-11-18 08:32:48
@kim, when are you planning the new release for jisho.org?
Ray Grieselhuber: 2008-11-18 08:04:48
great site
Ray Grieselhuber: 2008-11-18 08:04:47
I've just started using jisho.org a lot
Kirk McMurray: 2008-11-18 05:59:43
Hope that helps. Your demands certainly help me as the Head of Product, as I can tell how difficult it is to find lists of words for topics I'm interested in. We are working on improving our tagging, search and recommendation to make this MUCH better.
Kirk McMurray: 2008-11-18 05:58:56
http://www.iknow.co.jp/…/77853-information-technology
Kirk McMurray: 2008-11-18 05:58:14
But you can build your own list. Try searching for some terms you may want here: http://www.iknow.co.jp/items
Kirk McMurray: 2008-11-18 05:57:55
I have pasted in a list that someone already created.
Kirk McMurray: 2008-11-18 05:57:44
I work for iKnow! and you can use our bi-directional item bank (English - Japanese, Japenese - English) to search for terms you want to learn in either direction.

TOKYO - TWO people were killed and five others injured on Wednesday after a large fire engulfed a building in central Tokyo, a fire department spokesman said.

The blaze broke out in the three-story building in the Japanese capital's Shibuya district in the afternoon, and spread to several neighboring structures. TV footage showed the gutted building with a column of smoke rising from it.

The facility contained gunpowder and residents told firefighters they heard a large explosion just before the deadly blaze started, the spokesman said on condition of anonymity, citing department policy.

Police were investigating the exact cause of the fire. -- AP

Don't want to be critical because obviously I haven't tried the product yet; will definitely give it a go.

But I'm not very convinced about the name Bluebridge One - partly because there is already a bluebridgeone.com which is offering a (albeit very  oldschool Web 1.0) product in a related area (CRM)
yongfook: 2008-11-11 03:50:10
bluebridge.jp online yet?

.kristopher tate: 2008-11-10 04:55:10
I think you're right about trust
Eric Rice: 2008-11-10 03:53:50
Yammer/Twitter 2012!!
yongfook: 2008-11-10 03:24:08
the only thing that differentiates the services is trust, I think.  so as soon as salesforce etc provides their enterprise twitter solution, all these little ones can kiss their customers goodbye.
yongfook: 2008-11-10 03:23:11
and to create that kind of software is trivial.  me and another poster here (Takeshi Amano) built something like that for another company in about a month or so
yongfook: 2008-11-10 03:22:34
it's not like twitter where it's all open and has to scale massively, if you're aiming it at small businesses you could run a twitter-like service off a couple of servers.
yongfook: 2008-11-10 03:21:47
yammer & friends aren't necessarily stupid, but the barrier to entry to providing that kind of service is so low that it's not something I would ever want to do
Robert Sanzalone: 2008-11-10 03:15:53
Interesting.
.kristopher tate: 2008-11-10 03:15:28
this actually helps you get stuff done.
yongfook: 2008-11-10 03:15:28
heh
.kristopher tate: 2008-11-10 03:15:20
No, yammer & friends was quite stupid
yongfook: 2008-11-10 03:15:08
if it's twitter for enterprise I'm going to throw stuff.
yongfook: 2008-11-10 03:14:02
looking forward to it then
.kristopher tate: 2008-11-10 03:13:21
