    It is relatively inexpensive...

  • The cost of equipment is close to zero, being simply software that is free for anyone to download. It can be installed on existing equipment, with only the incidental cost of phones, headsets, and microphones.
  • There are no setup fees or termination fees. Competitors may well assess large fixed and termination fees.
  • The incremental costs of operation maintenance, and management are zero. For most users, there is no learning curve or training costs. It just works.
    •  It is heavily feature-laden...
  • It includes video.
  • It includes instant messaging.
  • It includes data sharing (file transfer).
  • It includes SMS messaging.
  • It includes conferencing (voice and video).
  • It interfaces with the PSTN network for both incoming (SkypeIN) and outgoing (SkypeOUT) calls.
  • It allows a business presence to be established in "foreign" locations, using SkypeIN numbers in any serviced exchange of any serviced country... (limited availability).
  • It accommodates at-home or on-the-road calling because it connects with any available broadband.
  • It includes the most essential business features (call forwarding, call transfer, and multi-location ringing.
  • All of the above features work with satisfactory or even superior quality (given that one's broadband connection is sufficiently wide and has low latency.
    •  It is reasonably secure (subject to certain precautions)...
  • It offers complete privacy via automatic encryption of all communication media.
  • It offers tools for dealing with spammers.
  • It does not offer openings for malware except via file transfer (which can be disabled).
    •  Finally, it is popular...

    Skype is 50 times bigger than all of its rivals combined. Moreover, it is profitable while all of its competitors (in the SIP space) are not. Therefore, its prospects in terms of long-term viability, are vastly superior.
