November 23, 2007.........Government spies frustrated by Skype encryption.

German Police say they are unable to break Skype encryption. It is not proof of the high quality of Skype security, but it is evidence, and this is good news for the regular Skype user. It is highly unlikely that a Skype/Skype call can be tapped.

That being said, there are still risks:

  • A tap can be placed at the computer's microphone, bypassing Skype altogether. A person with things to hide should regularly scan their Skype device for bugs.
  • A top can be placed on any PSTN call (SkypeIN or SkypeOUT) in the same way as any other PSTN call. A ridiculously cautious person might avoid this type of callling.
  • Because of "secondary login" (a known Skype security flaw), additional persons can log into a user account (with password) and thereby monitor the identity of incoming calls (but not tap into the calls themselves), and can actually see the content of chat traffic. As small as the problem may be, Skype has been aware of it for a long time. For some reason the company has been unable or unwilling to offer any resolution. For more information, see the security postings in the Borderless Communicator. In the meantime, guard your password closely and/or change it regularly.
  • No matter what, Skype remains the communications tool to beat in terms of privacy.
